Our Curriculum Intent

At St John’s, we believe that Physical Education makes an extremely important contribution to a child’s development by fostering positive attitudes towards health and fitness, co-ordination, co-operation and
competition. We aim to develop pupil’s self confidence and self-esteem through a wide variety of sporting experiences.

Throughout EYFS, Key Stage 1 and 2, children are taught Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, Striking and fielding, Net and wall, Fitness, teamwork and Outdoor Adventurous Activities and Invasion games. Swimming is taught in KS2. These form the core activities of the PE Curriculum. Each class has two high quality PE lessons each week.

St John’s also run extra-curricular sporting activities across both key stages at different times of the year, including football, cross-country, circus skills and multi sports. The school is developing its participation in out-of-school competition across the borough and in local events to give our children more opportunities to further improve their skills and enjoyment in physical activity and to understand the value of competition. We are very proud of all our children and their sporting achievements. They work well in teams and produce results we can all be very proud of.

All physical education experiences are intended to challenge all abilities and offer stimulating and inspiring learning. We also aim to promote the values of exercise, healthy living and foster enthusiasm for physical activities that will promote a lifelong interest in physical education as a whole.
