Reading
Reading at St John’s is essential because it builds the foundation for all future learning. When children develop strong reading skills early on, they become better at understanding instructions, exploring new ideas, and expressing themselves clearly. Reading also boosts vocabulary, improves concentration, and sparks imagination, helping children make sense of the world around them. Most importantly, confident readers are more likely to enjoy learning, which supports their success across every subject as they move through school.
At St John’s we follow the Little Wandle approach to our Guided reading sessions. These are sessions that are tailored to suit all children’s needs and to build on their fluency, prosody and comprehension skills. When they arrive in Year 5 and 6 they use VIPERS and the National curriculum objectives to carry out their guided reading sessions using everything they’ve been taught since Reception.
